Room Design Inspiration: Feature Shelf Display

Room Design Inspiration: Feature Shelf Display

Looking for a way to add some interest to a room in your living space? Showcase your favorite things in a shelf display!

Collectibles, trinkets, knickknacks and treasures. Many people have a number of these things. However, how many are left in boxes and never see the light of day? You can showcase your favorite things on a feature shelf to bring yourself joy and a conversation piece into a room. All you need is a open shelf! Allyson and I put together a shelf for my favorite geek grabs that I have acquired since childhood and it has become one of my favorite things in our space.

Materials used:

  • Ikea LACK wall shelf (click here to view Ikea’s products page in a new window) -[Does not come with screws]
  • 3 – all material size 8, 1 1/2″ long Screws
  • Stud finder
  • Various Geek Grabs from childhood until now

This is pretty basic so there isn’t much to explain, just find an ideal spot for your shelf. Once you have located where you want to place it, use the stud finder to locate the studs in the walls to securely attach the shelf. Once marked use a level to ensure the holes you will be level.  Once this is complete you will want to attach your mounting hardware by screwing it into the studs at your marked positions.  Then mount your shelf.  Hardware and installation can vary greatly, so be sure to follow your instructions. Also, as finding studs are required you may have to adjust your location to ensure everything is securely fastened. Drywall or plaster will not hold much weight at all!

Below are some photos of my treasured nerd pieces on my ‘feature’ shelf display in our living room. Fittingly enough this shelf helps add some interest to the sleek and otherwise empty space around our media center.
